In the early years of last century the Japanese benshi was an actor who narrated and did voice characterizations during silent movies live on stage next to the projected film. The neo-benshi show modern films with the sound muted, and reinterpret the images live, giving playful, subversive, and dramatic new readings to scenes from the popular cinema.
Recently a revival of this lost art has taken place in the Bay Area. Many people were turned away from our sold out show in July at Artists Television Access, so we are staging this repeat performance, featuring:
- Jennifer Nellis (Hitchock Presents)
- Dennis Somera (West Side Story)
- Stephanie Young (Vive L'Amour)
- Wayne Smith (Darling)
- Amanda Davidson (Firestarter)
- David Brazil (The Man Who Wasn't There)
- Konrad Steiner (Minority Report)
