ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Diplo (Fools Gold, Philadelphia – www.myspace.com/diplo): There are few DJs or producers on planet earth who have accomplished as much in as little time as Wes Pentz. From the art-scene at the Guggenheim in New York, to the bullet-riddled favelas of Rio di Janeiro to the sweat-soaked streets of Bombay and Bangladesh, Diplo has redefined the concept of “world music”. His merger of electronic backbeats, international rhythms, obscure influences and uncompromising vocals defined a sound, a style, and wildly successful series of releases known as Hollertronix. He spent years circling the globe with London superstar MC M.I.A. in a collaboration that broke down genre walls and dropped a few political bombs as well. He is credited with bringing Brazil’s Baile Funk sound to the US, reworking “Dirty South instrumentality into high art” (Now Magazine) and challenging every commonly held notion about Djs and producers. Recently he confounded the Fools Gold label with Nick Catchdubs as a vehicle for further aural mayhem. He estimates that his own tracks and reworks comprise more than 80% of his sets, and the energy he puts into these tracks is only matched by the energy he unleashes while performing them. On New Years Eve at Temple, he will play an exclusive 2 hour set beginning at the stroke of midnight.

DJ Rekha (Basement Bhangra, NYC – www.myspace.com/djrheka) DJ Rekha is celebrating the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, DJ REKHA presents BASEMENT BHANGRA (named after her world famous long running NY monthly party) Born in London, proudly raised in New York, Rekha Malhotra is a cultural instigator who’s established herself as a musical pioneer and community activist. Newsweek recognized her as one of the most influential South Asians in the US, and she has been praised by The New York Times, CNN, The Fader, Village Voice, and The Washington Post, among others. She has been relentless in her mission to bring South Asian Music and Culture to New York by spinning at events like P.S. 1’s Warm Up Series, Central Park’s Summerstage, Soundlab and Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturdays as well as her own parties including Mutiny, Bollywood Disco and the incredibly popular Basement Bhangra. She is known for her extraordinary musical range and was even chosen by documentarian Sarah Jones to work on the Obie Winning show “Bridge and Tunnel.” Rekha was also picked to be Associate Producer and Music Supervisor for the NPR Documentary “Feet in Two Worlds.” DJ Rekha’s talents further extend into her own production company Sangament, which produces live concerts and provides specialized music consulting services to numerous businesses in the record industry.

Pharrell (Fluokids, Paris – www.fluokids.com) Pharrell is the 'CEO' of the european audioblog 'fluokids', at 23 years old he already has his own residence on the french national radio, played with most of the major artist of the new electronic scene, opened for Justice on their last French tour, and promotes the monthly 'panik' party in Paris. Behind the decks, he's not just runnin' the dancefloor hits of the moment, he always try to bring some new stuff, from his first techno feelings to the last electronic bangers.

Nick Catchdubs (Fools Gold, NYC – www.myspace.com/nickcatchdubs) Nick Catchdubs is a Brooklyn-based DJ and co-founder of the Fool's Gold record label. For the past four years he's been playing shows with the likes of MIA, Spank Rock and the Clipse, and rocking parties around the globe with a mix of hip hop, electro, dancehall, rock and more.

Motion Potion (the Fringe/ Mutaytor, SF – www.myspace.com/motionpotion)

The “Dj for people who hate Djs” (SFWeekly) seems to have something for everyone. Funk impresario, mashup enthusiast, and live collaborator with Parliament-Funkadelic, Rebirth Brass Band and the turntablist for the 45-piece indie techno circus known as the Mutaytor. His career has been an attempt to break down genre and scene barriers, playing every conceivable kind of music in the course of a night, a set, or a seven-minute mash-up. His productions aim to unify the dance club and the concert hall with juicy, listening music (rock and funk) arrayed over breakbeats. His mix CD's range wider than most label's catalogs; live mixes that range from underground hip hop to electronic breaks to world fusion to rare southern rock (downloadable at www.musicv2.com/artist/motion_potion). The common denominator seems to be 'the funk' whether it be funky urban electronic breaks, funky underground hip hop, funky nu-school rock and electroclash, or just plain sho'nuff motherfunkin' FUNK.
