Sila And The Afrofunk Experience Organize Food Drives For The Thanksgiving Season. Fans Are Encouraged To Bring 5 Cans Of Food & In Exchange Receive $5 Off Their CD
In San Francisco alone, 150,000 people struggle each day to feed themselves and their families. The San Francisco Food Bank is a critical link between available food and people in need. They secure food from a variety of sources and distribute it throughout a network of more than 500 human service agencies in San Francisco serving various populations, including children, the homeless, people living with AIDS/HIV, the elderly, and the working poor. They operate several direct-service programs: Brown Bag for low-income seniors, the Emergency Food Box for people in crisis situations, and the Neighborhood Grocery Network for families in need. This year, the SF Food Bank will distribute 26 million pounds of food, or enough to provide 55,000 meals a day.
For a third year in a row, Sila and the the Afrofunk Experience are organizing food drives at their concerts for the thanksgiving season. Fans are encouraged to bring 5 cans or more of food to their concerts: Friday, November 21 at Ashkenaz in Berkeley (for San Francisco Food Bank) and Saturday, November 22 at Little Fox Theatre in Redwood City (for second Harvest of Santa Clara & San Mateo County). In exchange they will get $5 dollars off their CD.
' As a kid growing up poor in Kenya, I understood what it meant to go hungry and only have one meal a day. This is an opportunity for me to give back to those families in need especially during the thanksgiving period. I believe that enabling families to eat together strengthens our communities.' says Sila.
