SUMMARY:Call and Response
DESCRIPTION:Meridian Music commences its Fall 2010 series with \'Call And Response\' featuring poet Dottie Grossman and improvising trombonist Michael Vlatkovich. Grossman reads her poems aloud while Vlatkovich improvises a response on trombone. Neither knows in advance what the other will choose to do. The format creates an appealing artistic tension in a unique way – it reaches both literary and musical audiences\, while transcending the usual “jazz and poetry” formula. It skirts the obvious and the literal\, finding a common emotional point from which to spontaneously “compose” and combine the precision of poetry with the improvisational essence of jazz. The music enhances the words without overpowering them\, and vice-versa. \n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

DESCRIPTION:The secret to their popularity must surely lie in their exuberant\, sometimes comic performances\, the sweet and catchy or soft melancholic guitar melodies\, and music littered with emotive references to fado and other less prominent musical traditions. The songs carry the stories of Deolinda – a young Lisbon woman who lives with her cats and goldfish in an apartment and watches through her window as the world goes by – as brought to life by the group’s dynamic\, charismatic singer\, Ana Bacalhau\, who brings Deolinda’s stories to life.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:Transplanted: Three Commissioned Projects by Bay Area Newcomers
DESCRIPTION:The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery presentsTransplantedThree commissioned projects by Bay Area newcomersPawel Kruk\, Primitivo Suarez-Wolfe and Richard T. Walker.September 24 – December 18\, 2010Opening Reception: Friday\, September 24\, 6 – 8pmThe San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) Gallery is pleased to present Transplanted\, featuring three large-scale commissioned projects by Bay Area newcomers Pawel Kruk\, Primitivo Suarez-Wolfe and Richard T. Walker. How long do you have to live in the Bay Area to be considered a local artist? How quickly do new arrivals influence our cultural landscape and help establish defining regional aesthetics? How quickly does the Bay Area influence the artistic production of newcomers? These are a few of the underlying questions posed in Transplanted. For Transplanted\, each of the exhibiting artists was asked to create new work that reflects on how living in the Bay Area has influenced their artistic practice. Kruk\, a performance artist\, Suarez-Wolfe\, a sculptor\, and Walker\, a video artist\, each arrived with extensive\, international exhibition experience\, and in the past three years have caught the attention of local critics\, philanthropic organizations and major institutions (see bios below).Gallery Director and exhibition curator\, Meg Shiffler\, adds\, “This is the final exhibition in the SFAC Gallery’s 40th Anniversary season\, and we thought it was important to examine more closely what it means to live and create in a City where we have a significant population of artists living nomadically. Through the selection of newly transplanted artists who are committed to their lives in the Bay Area while remaining connected with their international network we can further the SFAC Gallery mission to promote a dialogue around how our local art production fits into an expansive\, global contemporary art discourse.”Locations\, Project Information\, and Biographical InformationRichard T. SUMMARY:Soul Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Fatih Akin takes a change of pace from heavy drama (such as his award-winning The Edge of Heaven) with this boisterous\, good-natured comedy that furthers his cinematic exploration of the new multicultural Europe. Greek-German Zinos (co-writer Adam Bousdoukos) operates a greasy spoon called Soul Kitchen in a Hamburg warehouse. If it isn’t bad enough that his girlfriend (Pheline Roggan) has left for Shanghai\, and his jailbird younger brother Illias (Moritz Bleibtreu) is asking him for a phony job\, but Zinos also manages to hurt his back\, and so he hires a replacement chef (Birol Ünel)\, a gypsy with serious “nouvelle cuisine” tendencies. Suddenly Soul Kitchen has become The Happening Place with its terrific food and soul-and-funk-infused music…as well as the latest target for predatory real estate developers. In German with English subtitles. With Anna Bederke\, Dorka Gryllus\, Udo Kier. Writers: Fatih Akin\, Adam Bousdoukos. Director: Fatih Akin. SUMMARY:Hamlet; Sven Gade and Heinz Schall (Germany\, 1920)
DESCRIPTION:Archival PrintBruce Loeb on PianoWe begin our series with two radically different approaches to Hamlet. This version is based on pre-Shakespearean Danish and German sources\, and depicts the Prince of Denmark as a girl forcibly raised as a boy in order to succeed to the throne. Nielsen’s performance in the title role is a marvel of expressiveness and restraint as she alternates between adolescent dreaminess and the very real pain of a woman obliged to disguise herself. Behind the pale mask of her androgynous face flash darkening eyes; she is bent on avenging not only her father’s murder\, but also her mother’s gender-meddling.—Lucy Laird• Written by Edwin Gepard. Photographed by Kurt Courant\, Axel Graattkjer. With Asta Nielsen\, Eduard von Winterstein\, Mathilde Brandt\, Paul Conradi. SUMMARY:Hamlet Goes Business; Aki Kaurismäki (Finland\, 1987)
DESCRIPTION:(Hamlet liikemaailmassa). “For every man hath business and desire . . . .” (Hamlet\, Act I\, Scene V). Hamlet as a cynical film noir set in the business world makes sense for our own out-of-joint time. Kaurismäki’s rendition is a resolutely deadpan spoof; visually\, a cross between George Kuchar and David Lynch—shot in black-and-white from every conceivable angle\, and some we hadn’t conceived of. Hamlet (comic Pirkka-Pekka Petelius)\, scion of a business concern\, is a pouty\, vaguely porcine young man\, distracted by his malfunctioning appetites and dismayed by the angst of life on this barren reef. He seems oblivious to the power he inherits upon the murder of his tycoon father\, but a robotic Ophelia (the delightfully depressed Kati Outinen) is but one of the victims of the treacherous greed that permeates the film. (“Better Hamlet’s fortune should go to you than to some secretary\,” Polonius counsels her.) But . . . our fingers on our lips\, for we have already told too much.—Judy Bloch • Written by Kaurismäki. Photographed by Timo Salminen. With Pirkka-Pekka Petelius\, Kati Outinen\, Elina Salo\, Esko Salminen. (86 mins\, In Finnish with English subtitles\, B+W\, 35mm\, From Finnish Film Foundation\, permission Villealfa Filmproduction Oy) Preceded at 6:30 by Hamlet; Sven Gade\, Heinz Schall (Germany\, 1920). SUMMARY:Artists\' Reception: Thursday\, September 2\, 6-8pm
DESCRIPTION: Berlier\, Jeff Hantman\, Sean McFarland and Ranu Mukherjee Artists: Terry Berlier Jeff Hantman Sean McFarlandRanu Mukherjee Kala Fellowships are awarded annually to nine innovative artists working in printmaking\, photography\, book arts\, installation\, video and digital media. Fellowship artists are selected from a competitive field of applicants from North America\, South America\, Europe\, Africa\, Australia and Asia. Recipient artists receive a financial award and up to six-months residency at Kala’s studio facility followed by an exhibition of their new work. The Kala Gallery is proud to present the first of our two-part exhibition series\, Residency Projects\, featuring work by our 2009-2010 Fellowship artists. The Kala Directors in association with juror Larry Rinder\, Director of Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive\, selected the artists. Residency Projects I was presented earlier this summer with new works by Kala Fellows Val Britton\, Chris Duncan\, Katy Higgins\, Laura Paulini and Bassem Yousri. Terry Berlier is an interdisciplinary artist who creates sound sculpture and installations that are both kinetic and interactive. Her work often focuses around everyday objects\, ideas of nonplace/place and queer practice. Terry will be presenting Remain Human: The Slatter’s Court Project\, a 43 minute video that documents the lives of residents in an outdated auto camp that has been designated “blight” by the liberal town of Davis\, California. Also included in the exhibition is NFS\, an interactive video installation that explores the lives of a San Francisco lesbian couple from the 1930’s. A key element of the work is a set of window shutters that open and close in relationship to the viewer. The fluctuating movement of the shutters either reveals or obscures vintage lesbian porn and an alternate film loaded with latent homoerotic undercurrents. Terry received the 2008 New Visions of California Award that provided a residency at the Exploratorium. Her work has been presented in numerous national and international exhibitions. Terry is currently a Professor of Sculpture at Stanford University. Jeff Hantman creates three-dimensional mixed media works that combine photography\, appropriated images and screen-printing on scrap plywood. The wood has been retrieved from local construction sites or collected from the side of the road. These salvaged sections of plywood are often covered with oil stains and weathered paint indicating age\, neglect and the passage of time out in the elements. Jeff meticulously reassembles the cast-off plywood into constructions that suggest fragments of architectural structures. These elaborately curved plywood structures are layered with screen-printed imagery. The resulting works poetically suggest faded memories of a distant past. Jeff was an artist in residence last year at Djerassi. His work is also currently on view at the Barra Windows in Berkeley. Sean McFarland works in a variety of photographic processes that examine our relationship to the landscape with particular attention on alterations to the urban environment including the construction of buildings\, roads and parks. Presented in the exhibition are works from Pictures of the Earth\, a photographic series created from an extensive archive of landscape images. These images include original photographs created by the artist plus landscapes found in print and collected from the Internet. The source photographs are re-photographed and assembled into visually mysterious composite images that are presented as intimately scaled Polaroids. Sean was honored with a 2009 Baum Award to Emerging American Photographers that included an exhibition at SF Camerawork. He was the recipient of the James D. Phelan Award in Photography in 2005. His work has been presented at White Columns in New York\, San Jose Museum of Art\, Marx and Zavattero Gallery and Eleanor Harwood Gallery. Ranu Mukherjee creates hybrid works in video animation and drawing to depict abstract forms of nomadic living that are both historical and contemporary. Included in the exhibition is a two-sided video projection. Projected on one side Indian Picture – from Ganga to Jupiter depicts a reel of audiotape from a 1957 recording of the planet Jupiter created by the artist’s scientist father as it floats down the Ganges River. On the opposite side European Picture – a neo-romantic delay: a field of particles refers to the recent Icelandic volcanic eruption as a cloud of ash covers a procession of luggage and people sleeping amidst a swirling particle storm. Also included is Everyday Futurism\, a salon style presentation of screen-printed phrases overlaid on ink paintings that explore the tension between the public/private self. Ranu’s work has recently been presented internationally and in San Francisco at The Luggage Store\, New Langton Arts\, The Lab and Noma’s Gallery Videoh0le project space. Ranu teaches video arts at California College of the Arts. \n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:Losing My Religion: Confessions of a New Age Refugee
DESCRIPTION:Losing My Religion: Confessions of a New Age Refugee highlights the absurdities\, paradoxes\, and heartfelt qualities of having any kind of spiritual leaning. The audience is escorted through an earnest\, sidesplitting depiction of the trials and tribulations of losing and finding one\'s spiritual path.Lepore uses his fecund imagination to take a humorous and sincere look at the pitfalls and biases that make up the melting pot of spiritual choices. The intention of the piece is to create an ongoing dialogue that presents more questions than answers in terms of how we approach faith as a culture. The one-man show \'is a humorous\, ironic and sardonic look at the blurry line between self-help and faith. Based on his own spiritual journey\, which saw him leave the Catholic Church as a teenager and meander through Buddhism and a host of other isms\, the monologue juxtaposes wickedly funny and insightful characterizations of the people he has met along the way with thoughtful commentary on [Lepore\'s] own spiritual seeking.Lepore comes across a lone\, common-man hero. Possessing a rubber-faced ability to slide cleanly into character and deadly accurate powers of observation\, Lepore\'s acting is worth the price of admission alone.Carefully chosen words make the satire wicked and the comedy rapier-sharp. His humor comes on many levels -- sometimes over-the-top\, often much more subtle -- and that makes an evening rise above stand-up comedy to something closer to social commentary.\' Jon Potter\, Brattleboro ReformerWritten and Performed by Seth Lepore. SUMMARY:The Monster Girl Show with Erika Lopez
DESCRIPTION:Join Erica Lopez and Friends in an eveningof delightful mirth and psychodramacelebrating the release ofThe Girl Must Dieproduced by Monster Girl MediaThe Monster Girl explosion is here! Erika Lopez becomes the conduit for primal forces that express themselves through pen and ink. Monster Girls are the ones that rebel against the hardening of our cultural arteries. A zeitgeist\, a calling\, an emergence of forces fighting against \'the embrace of quiet desperation\'. Monster Girls exist—not because they WANT to—but because they need to. It\'s in their blood. The DNA that has been passed down from The Beginning of Time\, back when tiny people lived in transistor radios\, vaginas had teeth\, and Neanderthal Monster Girls squatted through The First Supper\, leading to the tantrums and quiet tensions of post-modern dinner tables of today. This is for the ones who must white-knuckle it through polite society. We eat sugar-free nothing\, for we are sugar: Granular. Unrefined. Evil. There\'s no \'on/off\' switch\, no safety net\, no do-overs or practice throws. You have one chance\, and one chance only\, like a fearless tightrope walker. One mis-step and you\'ll plummet into the gorge of mediocrity. Come join the uprising!Erika Lopez is a cartoonist\, novelist\, publisher\, and performance artist. She is the author of Flaming Iguanas\, They Call Me Mad Dog\, Hoochie Mama\, and several other books. She is the excecutive director and publisher of Monster Girl Media. SUMMARY:David Buckingham: Don\'t Hate Me Because I\'m Beautiful
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception Thur\, Sept 2\, 6-8pm; Show runs Sept 2 - Oct 2\, Tues-Sat 11-5This exhibition addresses a variety of issues found in American culture\, from gun fascination\, violence\, and rampant capitalism to plastic surgery. His deceptively simple sculptures made of found metal are direct in a technique that is cleverly disconcerting and dispassionately humorous. Echoes of his background in advertising can be seen in his textual work\, starting from the title piece: \'Don\'t Hate Me Because I\'m Beautiful\'\, a line from an 80\'s TV commercial for shampoo\, however the political correctness of commercialism is quickly abandoned. It is a giddy celebration of\, and a venomous assault on\, modern American culture. The artist will be present at the opening reception Sept 2\, 6-8PM. Opening reception Thur\, Sept 2\, 6-8pm; Show runs Sept 2 - Oct 2\, Tues-Sat 11-5. SUMMARY:Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo
DESCRIPTION:Long-time Flaming Lips collaborator and director Bradley Beesley (Fearless Freaks\, Christmas on Mars)\, continues exploring Americana. SWEETHEARTS OF THE PRISON RODEO goes behind prison walls to follow convict cowgirls on their journey to the 2007 Oklahoma State Penitentiary Rodeo. In 2006\, female inmates were allowed to participate for the first time. In a state with the highest female incarceration rate in the country\, these women share common experiences such as broken homes\, drug abuse and alienation from their children. Since 1940\, the Oklahoma State Penitentiary has held an annual ‘Prison Rodeo’. Part Wild West show and part coliseum-esque spectacle\, it’s one of the last of its kind - a relic of the American penal system. Prisoners compete on wild-broncs and bucking bulls\, risking life-long injuries. For inmates like Danny Liles\, a 14-year veteran of the rodeo\, the chance to battle livestock offers a brief respite from prison life. Within this strange arena the prisoners become the heroes while the public and guards applaud.Director in person for Q+A at both 7:15 and 9:30 screeningshttp://sweetheartsoftheprisonrodeo.com/\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:As Above
DESCRIPTION:Design Guild SF Presents:As AboveAerial photographs by Fred Padula and Pedro CitolerFred Padula is a photographer and filmmaker best known for the cult climbing classic El Capitan. In 1976\, Padula started flying small planes. From this vantage point\, he became aware of how man’s activities were changing the landscape and began shooting aerial photos. If you’ve flown in a commercial airplane\, you’ve seen the earth from 30\,000 feet. But most people have not seen it from 1\,000 feet\, where the benign and the destructive are seen from a new vantage point\, as a contaminated landscape mysteriously evokes the beauty of what has been decimated. Pedro Citoler takes flight over German cities in a powered paraglider. Flying closer to the earth\, Citoler captures the German allotment gardens known as Kleingartens. Initially provided to German city dwellers as gardens in which to grow their own food\, they are increasingly used for recreation and social gatherings. Citoler’s voyeuristic images are playful\, infusing the quotidian and mundane with the joy of discovery.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:40th Anniversary Isle of Wight Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Forty years ago\, in August of 1970\, the legendary third-annual Isle of Wight Festival hit the stage with some 600\,000 screaming fans in attendence\, the biggest ever rock festival in Europe. It was a chaotic affair that redefined festival madness. The attendees\, most without tickets\, descended on the tiny English Channel island to hear the likes of The Who\, Jimi Hendrix (in his last live festival performance; he died 18 days later in London)\, Jethro Tull\, the Moody Blues\, Miles Davis\, Joan Baez\, the Doors (in their final U.K. gig with Jim Morrison)\, Joni Mitchell and Sly and the Family Stone. Fortunately for us\, New York based filmmaker Murray Lerner was there to document the entire event! We are presenting eight of Lerner\'s films\, including nearly complete performances from six artists and the two-hour documentary\, MESSAGE TO LOVE\, that puts the entire event into perspective. General admission $9; $35 Festival Pass available at the box office.Wednesday\, Sept 22: Leonard Cohen - 2:00\, 7:15Listening to You: The Who - 9:15 Thursday Sept. 23:Jethro Tull: Nothing is Easy - 7:15The Moody Blues - 9:15Friday Sept. 24:Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue - 7:00Message to Love: The Isle of Wight Festival - 9:35Saturday Sept. 25:Message to Love: The Isle of Wight Festival - 2:00\, 9:35Jimi Hendrix - 4:30\, 9:35\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:Tomorrow is Never Promised exhibition by Erik Otto
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Saturday\, September 11\, 2010 7-11 pmExhibition Dates: September 11 - October 2\, 2010White Walls Gallery is pleased to present Tomorrow is Never Promised\, a solo exhibition by San Francisco based artist\, Erik Otto. The artist addresses the idea of facing personal fears in order to make the necessary shifts to reach one\'s true potential and to realign one\'s life towards real progress. The exhibition will be comprised of approximately 30 mixed media pieces\, an installation and a limited edition screen print. The opening reception for Tomorrow is Never Promised will be held at White Walls Gallery on Saturday\, September 11\, 2010 from 7-11 pm. The exhibit will be on display through October 2\, 2010 and is free and open to the public.Erik Otto\'s work is an observation of the human experience that is continually informed by the pressures and demands of the outside world. Otto creates his art to openly engage the viewer by communicating the shared struggle we all encounter to connect our awakened state to our desires found within. In constructing his pieces with found and salvaged materials\, he expresses the personal satisfaction he receives from discovering use out of the “unusable”. In his new exhibition\, Tomorrow is Never Promised\, the artist illustrates the themes of living in the present\, times of solitude and\, self-fulfillment versus self-destruction. The works will also depict the transient nature of time and how it dictates the uncertainty of life. The pieces for the exhibition are composed of house paint\, spray paint\, pencil\, collage and screen print on recycled canvas or panel framed in reclaimed fence wood. All of the material for the show is sourced from Recology San Francisco as well as the \'free\' section on Craigslist.org.Erik Otto received his BFA from San Jose State University and currently lives and works in San Francisco\, California. He has recently been commissioned by Dwell Magazine for their Dwell on Design show as well as Microsoft for their Seattle Headquarter. In 2009 Otto was awarded a residency with Recology San Francisco and will be exhibiting in their 20 Year Anniversary Show in July 2010. The artist has shown nationally with The Shooting Gallery\, Fabric 8 Galleries and Charmingwall Gallery.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

In May of 1981\, he hosted the first exhibition of his work in his studio. In the intervening 30 years\, Mark has continued to exhibit his own work in addition to exhibiting the work of other underground and sexual artists of all genders and sexual orientations. These shows have documented cultures and communities outside the mainstream\, and outside the normal purview of the fine art world. Mark’s own work has focused on sexual portraiture\, but in the context of an ever broadening and developing gay identity and the increasing public emergence of this previously underground sexual community. Over the years\, his work has acted as a kind of dark explicit diary\, capturing pieces of who we have been as we have changed\, both as individuals and as a community. The show will be open Sat from 1pm-6pm and Sun\, 11am-6pm\, during the Folsom St. Fair\, which runs right outside his studio. The show will also be open thru 2010 by appointment by calling 415-621-6294. Mark’s work and more information can be previewed at http://markichester.com. And in what has become an annual tradition for the last ten years\, Mark will also be taking free digital pix of anyone who comes to his studio Folsom weekend. \n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:Thinkings by Brad Borevitz
DESCRIPTION:Thinkings: How computers change the way we see by altering the way we thinkby Brad Borevitza three-part discussion seriesIt is all but undeniable that our life with computers has changed us: what we see\, how we see it\, and how we think about it. Still\, a deep understanding of the significance of that change is difficult to grasp. We tend to focus on the epiphenomena rather than the deep structure of computational culture. We are immersed in brands\, in products\, in spectacle and experience: Google\, Facebook\, Youtube\, and iPhone\, 3D\, texting and sexting – but we rarely consider data as such\, or what a system is – at least consciously. And yet\, our way of seeing and thinking is arguably radically different after the recent ubiquity of computers. In Thinkings\, Brad Borevitz\, who sometimes refers to his own work with computers as \'conceptual software\' will facilitate an exploration of the impact of computers on art practice and the practice of every day life. Over the course of three evenings\, participants will work through concepts which the artist sees as crucial to understanding the computer\'s impact: the automation of variation\, the automation of the sublime\, and the automation of the image itself. In coining the term Thinkings on an analogy with Kaprow\'s Happenings\, Borevitz emphasizes the relation between the prepared score of a curriculum and the improvisation of a participatory learning experience. Thinkings include the expectation that the event can serve as a platform for the thought of participants and artist together\, not simply the presentation of thought as an already accomplished feat or fact. There are no prerequisites\, no homework. The purchase of a book produced for the series is required ($25.00\, scholarships available based on need). Participants are strongly encouraged to attend all three events.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

Bring the kids and the grandkids too. We\'re all indoors so the heat won\'t matter. Come have a grand time! The special events of The Pixar Tribute are in addition to all of Playland\'s regular attractions. Guests pay one low price to enter and play all day: $10 for children and seniors\, and $15 for general admission. Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is a nonprofit Museum of Fun. Designed and built entirely by volunteers\, the 20+ interactive exhibits celebrate the magic and history of America\'s bygone amusements -- circuses\, carnivals\, magic\, side shows\, penny arcades\, amusement devices\, pinball arcades\, haunted houses\, and beautiful art everywhere. Our goal is to educate newer generations about the bygone days and allow those who remember Whitney\'s Playland and the Sutro Baths the opportunity to recapture the glorious sights and sounds of that marvelous era.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:Tokihiro Sato \'Trees\'
DESCRIPTION:Tokihiro Sato’s third solo exhibition at Haines Gallery features photographs made during a two year period from 2008 to 2009 in the Shirakami-Sanchi and Hakkoda mountains in northern Honshu\, Japan. Fascinated by the sculptural features of the Japanese Beech tree\, Sato’s black and white photographs honor the stoic beauty of this natural form\, which\, for him\, suggests the ancient continental origins of the Japanese people: “It’s form is like the muscles and bones of the male body yet it’s curve is like that of a woman.”Originally a sculptor\, Sato turned to photography in the late 1980’s to further explore notions of light and space. His topographic photographs articulate metaphysical\, sculptural\, and performative ideas\, often referencing conceptual and land art of the 1970’s. In Trees\, the artist continues to employ a unique photographic technique he terms “photo respiration”\, a reference to the meditative quality of repetitive choreographed gestures he enacts in front of the camera.Using an 8 x 10-inch camera fitted with a darkening filter\, Sato makes lengthy exposures lasting from one to three hours\, during which time he moves throughout the described landscape. When shooting in daylight\, he flashes a mirror at the sun\, reflecting its light into the camera lens. For nocturnal or interior views he “draws” with a small flashlight. The resulting photographs depict exquisitely detailed scenes punctuated by tiny pinpoints of light that track Sato’s movement but not his physical form. Tokihiro Sato was born in 1957 in Sakata\, Yamagata Prefecture\, in northern Honshu\, Japan. He earned degrees in Sculpture from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music\, where he is now a professor. His work is held in numerous public and private collections\, including The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston; The Art Institute of Chicago; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Cleveland Museum of Art; and The Hara Museum of Art\, Tokyo. Over the past decade\, he has held solo exhibitions at such institutions as the Cleveland Museum of Art and The Art Institute of Chicago. Presence or Absence: The Photographs of Tokihiro Sato is on view at the Frist Center for Visual Arts in Nashville\, Tenn. through September 12\, 2010.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:Allison Smith \'Pitcher Collection\'
DESCRIPTION:Haines Gallery is pleased to present “Allison Smith: Pitcher Collection\,” a series of over one hundred new works on paper in which images of quotidian objects are meticulously cut out of context and serially collaged onto sheets of handmade paper. As the exhibition’s title suggests\, Smith offers a playful confusion between image and object\, proposing pictures of material culture as both physical material and subject of study.Objects that are emblematic\, if not iconic\, of colonial-era American craft\, including stoneware jugs\, painted chests\, and canopy beds\, largely populate this visual lexicon. Each evincing an arresting\, undeniable presence\, either alone\, in pairs\, or in charged relation to others\, the objects pictured exhibit an uncanny anthropomorphism that verges on the erotic. This work represents an attempt by Smith to \'process” ideas\, taking stock of and making visible a subjective inventory of images that she has used as studio reference material for many years\, from former museum picture archives\, auction catalogs\, how-to books on colonial craft\, and interior decorating magazines. Indeed\, there are pictures of pitchers and many other objects that are containers for latent metaphors and meanings. In addition to the pre-modern crafts\, embedded in the works are obscure references to decorative arts and design history\, the Arts + Craft Movement\, the studio craft movement\, and to modern and contemporary art as well.Since 2005\, Allison Smith has been making sculptures\, many of which are monumental versions of 19th Century toys\, that serve as provocative centerpieces and post-event artifacts of large-scale gatherings such as military encampments\, parades\, craft fairs\, and other public convocations in which hundreds of participants are encouraged to “take history into their own hands.” Her series of events called “The Muster” was inspired by American Civil War battle reenactments and was organized around the question\, “What are you fighting for?” In her project called “Notion Nanny\,” she took on the role of an itinerant apprentice\, learning traditional skills\, from blacksmithing to lace-making\, and tracing the Arts + Crafts Movement from its origins in England’s Lake District all the way to the Bay Area\, culminating in a MATRIX Series exhibition at the Berkeley Art Museum in 2007.Smith has exhibited her work widely in the U.S. and abroad. In 2008\, she joined the Sculpture and Graduate Fine Arts faculty at California College of the Arts. Last year she was named one of the top San Francisco Artadia Award winners\, and received an Alternative Exposure grant from Southern Exposure\, a Headlands Center for the Arts residency\, and most recently\, a Creative Work Fund grant. She is currently working on a publication to document a yearlong project with SFMOMA\, as well as upcoming shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and Southern Exposure\, both opening in the spring of 2011. This is her first exhibition at Haines Gallery.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:Alternative Visions: Unseen Cinema (Revolutions in Technique and Form)
DESCRIPTION:To mark the 10th anniversary of Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film\, 1893-1941\, we present two programs from the twenty-program series organized by curator Bruce Posner\, producer/preservationist David Shepard\, and Anthology Film Archives and Deutsches Filmmuseum. In 2006\, the DVD release received a special citation from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Robert Koehler commented\, “It isn\'t often that a film\, let alone a DVD release\, can be said to rewrite history\, but that\'s the case with the new seven-disc box set\, Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde . . . . [W]hat makes Unseen Cinema essential for any serious film lover is the argument it makes: That long before the post-war period of Maya Deren\, Stan Brakhage\, and Jonas Mekas\, Americans were experimenting with film form and subject matter. There\'s no more transparently false idea in film criticism than the notion that everything in cinema has been seen and written about—that there are no new discoveries. Unseen Cinema deliciously\, deliriously puts a firm stop to this falsehood.”7:30 Revolutions in Technique and FormTonight’s program features classics of the avant-garde including Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand’s Manhatta\, “a radical modern masterpiece. . . one of the first American avant-garde films and a forerunner of the ‘city symphony’ films\,” according to Posner. Man Ray’s Le Retour á la raison\, Fernand Léger and Dudley Murphy’s Ballet mécanique\, and Marcel Duchamp’s Anémic cinéma are grouped with examples of early American cinema that exhibit post-modernistic tendencies. SUMMARY:Feldman | Otto | Steiner
DESCRIPTION:MICAËLA GALLERY presents the work of three talented artists; Bella Feldman\, Nancy Otto\, + Monika Steiner.Opening Reception: Sept. 2nd 5:00-7:30pmExhibition Ends: Oct. 30thThe gallery offers a survey of the remarkable career of Bella Feldman. Since the early 70’s\, Feldman has made extraordinary objects - objects that rivet your attention by their physical appearance; their mass\, material\, and balance. The presence of her work immediately summons a bodily response. These sculptures are beautiful\, yet they contain an element of threat and of irony. They are what critic Harold Rosenberg aptly called “anxious objects.” They are made in anxious times.Nancy Otto offers an intimate installation that presents the viewer with a voyeuristic window into an inner world of frozen reality. Her subtle use of glass\, seductively pushes the structural boundaries of the material and generates a quiet tension between the precarious and the fragile. The rich oil paintings of Monika Steiner\, investigate the subtle relationship between perception and material reality. Her paintings are hypnotically meditative by virtue of their multiple layers. The surfacing and dissolving of shapes in her work are a metaphor for the cycle of appearances arising from\, then\, returning to a state of pure potential.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:The 13th Annual Music for People + Thingamajigs Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Music For People + Thingamajigs Festival is an annual event dedicated to promoting experimental music that incorporates made/found instruments and alternate tuning systems. Each year\, MFP+T invites artists who design their own musical instruments to join in a festival of workshops\, music making\, and performances with the goal of reaching a large\, diverse audience of all ages. It is also a festival where the public can participate in instrument building and tuning educational workshops\, as well as hear unique sounds and compositions from up and coming artists. Now in its 13th year\, Thingamajigs’ genre-crossing MFP+T Festival is the only annual event completely dedicated to music created with made/found materials and alternate tuning systems. Past participants include Karla Kihlstedt\, Walter Kitundu\, Pauline Oliveros\, Brenda Hutchinson\, William Winant\, and Laetitia Sonami. This year’s festival features music and world premiere performances from over 15 exciting artists and groups from the Bay Area and beyond. Noted works include a piece for multiple performers and two parrots by Mills College faculty Wendy Reid; “Music for Breathers” -a musical instrument that analyzes participants’ breath patterns designed by Conner Lacy; a hybrid guitar called “The Global Guitar” that can play Traditional Indian tunings by Matthew Montfort; and a modified instrument called “Photo Koto” created and performed by Gretchen Jude. Many of these artists will perform in the evening concerts as well as demonstrate their instruments at the family event at MOCHA. The family event will welcome some of Bay Area’s most interesting new music groups and artists for an exhibition of musical installations\, performances\, and instrument building workshops for kids. This event will take place outside in MOCHA’s beautiful courtyard as well as in their classrooms inside the museum. With concerts\, artist talks/demonstrations\, and a free community outing\, we expect the 13th Annual Music For People + Thingamajigs Festival to be our most far reaching and successful event to date.Thursday\, September 24th 8pm: NOHspace\, 2840 Mariposa Street\, San Francisco\, CA 94110 ($10-$15 sliding scale).Friday\, September 25th 8pm: Uptown Body + Fender\, 401 26th Street\, Oakland\, CA ($10-$15 sliding scale).Saturday\, Sepember 26th 8pm: 21 Grand\, 416 25th Street\, Oakland\, CA ($10-$15 sliding scale).Sunday\, September 27th 1-4pm: MOCHA\, 538 Ninth Street\, Suite 210\, Oakland\, CA 94607 (free with museum admission)\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:Bi-Poseur
DESCRIPTION:BI-POSEURWritten and performed by Paolo SambranoDirected by W. Kamau BellFull run opens in San Francisco on September 2 through September 26About Bi-PoseurThis is all supposed to be funny. Remember that. But\, Paolo thinks he’s going to die. And not just quietly in his sleep when he’s 87 either. He’s convinced that the blood clot in his leg is going to make its way into his chest\, causing a major heart attack\, which would kill Paolo instantly at his desk\, while he was updating his status on Facebook. And this is all assuming that Paolo doesn’t kill himself first. Either by finally manning up and slitting his wrists (just making sure to avoid the tendons to retain use of his hands if he screws up) or maybe jumping in front of a BART train (although he doesn’t wanna be remembered as the ass who got the trains delayed). But first\, he has to write the perfect suicide note\, which he can\'t seem to do.If you don’t think that’s dark (or hilarious) enough\, today is the day his mom died\, fourteen years ago. Paolo’s going to visit her grave\, to sort out all this cosmic screwing around. From psych wards with 12-year-old white supremacists\, to full scholarships at exclusive prep schools in Marin County\, to Playstation controllers used as improvised nooses\, what’s someone who might be bi-polar to do? Remember\, this is a comedy. Trust us.Featured by both the San Francisco Chronicle and the SF Weekly\, Bi-Poseur\, the solo show that Hiya Swanhuyser of the SF Weekly said\, “mines the depths and comes up with gold” is coming back to the intimate (and subterranean) StageWerx Theatre in Union Square for its triumphant month long engagement in September. Starting on Thursday\, September 2 with three performances a week\, on Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays through Saturday\, September 25.Bi-Poseur is proudly directed by the indomitable W. Kamau Bell (Of The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About An Hour fame and director of Enzo Lombard’s Love Humiliation\, + Karaoke and Jennifer Jajeh’s I Heart Hamas: And Other Things I’m Afraid to Tell You\, among other solo shows).About Paolo SambranoSome say that Oakland native Paolo Sambrano has done more than the average twenty-three year old\, but less than the above average twenty-three year old. For the moment\, we’re not talking about those above average twenty-three year olds\, with their college degrees\, and stable jobs\, and not living with their family. We’re talking about Paolo Sambrano! He’s done stuff! Like he thought he wanted to be a filmmaker in high school\, and he produced some great films that people enjoyed! He was nominated for a Golden Gate Award at the 2005 San Francisco International Film Festival\, for his work on the Youth Sounds classic\, Elements and was invited to the Sundance Film Festival! Which he attended! And he produced a documentary there! And guess what? He is the youngest member of the soon to be internationally recognized Solo Performance Workshop! And what of Bi-Poseur\, his first ever full length solo show that he wrote? Developed in a year! A year! About the same amount of time it took Napoleon to conquer Europe. That’s pretty cool right? Not the Napoleon thing\, but writing a solo show in a year. Right? Of course!About W. Kamau BellW. Kamau Bell is a solo performer\, director\, and stand up comedian. He performed his solo show The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour to sold-out houses in San Francisco\, Berkeley\, and Oakland\, as well as the New York International Fringe Festival and the Comedy Central stage in LA. He is the founder and director of the Solo Performance Workshop\, which is rapidly emerging as one of the top development labs for solo artists in the Bay Area. Kamau\'s other directing credits include don\'t make me look too psychotic\, F**king Handicapped Guy\, miss-matches.com\, I Heart Hamas\, and Love\, Humiliation\, + Karaoke all of which enjoyed extended runs. In 2008\, the SF Weekly honored Kamau as their Comedian of the Year and in 2009 they made him the subject of a cover story. He has appeared at the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal and his television appearances include Comedy Central\, Comics Unleashed\, KQED’s Spark\, ABC’s View From The Bay\, and Filter on G4. Comedy Central credits Kamau with telling the first ever Barack Obama joke in 2005. DESCRIPTION:fabric8 is pleased to present the first half of Tomorrow Is Never Promised\, a solo show featuring new works by artist Erik Otto. The second half of the show will debut the following week at White Walls. In his largest solo show to date\, filling two San Francisco galleries\, Erik Otto illustrates the themes of struggle one must face in order to achieve growth – self-fulfillment versus self-destruction and how the transient nature of time dictates the uncertainty of life. In addition to painting\, he has designed and built large-scale installations\, theatre sets\, retail storefronts\, private commissions\, and independent film sets. SUMMARY:Nancy Calef \'Elephant in the Room\' New oil and mixed media 3D paintings
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: September 29 - October 14\, 2010Opening Reception: September 30\, 6-9 pmCalef\'s uniquely recognizable “Peoplescapes\,” (oil\, sculptured characters and applied objects on canvas)\, address cultural\, political and spiritual issues facing society. By juxtaposing people in recognizable places and situations\, each painting weaves together a story about contemporary life\, filled with layers of detail\, symbolism and humor. “Plane slashing” is the latest progression of her 3D technique building up the canvas; lately she\'s tearing\, cutting and manipulating the plane of an existing painting\, while integrating it with one or more finished canvases attached. Painting into the deconstructed imagery as a whole\, leaving various portions of the underlying picture(s) in tact\, results in a cohesively transformed multi-dimensional piece. \n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site

SUMMARY:Artists Leading Artists opening at Swell Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Recognizing that faculty and staff are productive artists in their own right\, the show intends to celebrate the academic tradition in which established artists lead new generations of artists\, while the students inspire them in return. Frida Cano - Fundacion/Coleccion Jumex scholar and Claudia Schidlow\, current EMS students at SFAI\, develop a project in which collaboration between students and faculty occurs. Both the Diego Rivera Gallery - at the 800 Chestnut Street campus - and Swell Gallery - at SFAI\'s Graduate campus - will function as the laboratory in which this adventure will occur. The space and light conditions of the Diego Rivera Gallery will encourage more traditional work to be displayed\, in comparison with the Swell Gallery where media based works will take place.\n______________________________\nThis Event Downloaded From a Helios Calendar Powered Site
